Bequests
[One wrong view] that many of us hold is the view that we are only this body, and that when we die, we cease to exist. This wrong view blinds us to all the ways in which we are interconnected with the world around us and the ways in which we continue after death.

– Thich Nhat Hanh, The Art of Living
One way that we continue after our bodily death is through the legacy of our actions. We cannot know the ultimate result of our lifetime of actions, but we can do our best to leave the world a better place and to make a lasting statement about what matters to us, even after we are gone.
One way to leave a legacy of compassion and care
beyond your lifetime is to include Compassionate Ocean in your will or estate plan.

In 2018, a sangha member left a bequest of several thousand dollars to Compassionate Ocean. Because our small organization runs on a very lean budget, that bequest made a big difference—preventing a net loss for the year and giving us a small cash cushion that helped us cover basic expenses the following year.

Questions

Is there a minimum financial requirement for a planned gift?
No. A gift in any amount is welcome.
If I make a bequest in my will, do I have to specify a dollar amount?
No. You can specify a percentage of your entire estate or of what is left after other bequests are fulfilled.
Can I change my bequest?
Yes. You can change your bequest as you
wish, whenever you wish.
Is there a tax advantage to including a
bequest to a charitable organization in my will or trust?
Maybe. If your estate is subject to estate tax, you may be able to use your charitable bequest as a deduction to reduce the taxes charged on your estate. Consult with your attorney or financial advisor.
